Use a number line

---------------------
…-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4…

So if you had 2 and you wanted to subtract 3 from it you would have +2 + (-3) = ?
You start at two and count down three numbers which would give you -1.

You can already handle negative numbers when the positive number is positive. For example 6-2 is the same as 6 + (-2) = 4

Therefore you only have to worry about situations where the negative number is larger. In that case switch the sign and keep it negative. So +2 + (-3) = +2-+3= can’t do that so switch the order +3-+2 = 1, but we switched the sign so it is -1.
