Doubt it.... its the cost of living. Gas costs more, homes cost more, food costs more, taxes are higher... My mom lives in south carolina and I live in southern california... She moved there from here last year and it is so much cheaper there. Our tax is around 8%, hers is around 5. When my gas is $3.20 hers is $2.60. She sold her house here for 550K and bought a house the exact same size and about 8 years newer for 220K. So since it costs more to live in certain places, people need to get paid more there as well.

Part of the reason for the difference in wages is the difference in demand for certain jobs and supply in the labor pool. For example, in Utah, doctors get paid much less than they do in surrounding states because there are so many Utah natives that are doctors. So, many of these people want to start their practice in Utah, thus increasing the labor supply of doctors. This drives down the wages.

The difference is cost of living actually varies from place to place within a state too.

The house in a large city that cost $300K, cost $100K in the rural area 50 miles outside the metro area.

No, the prices on everything fluctuate from area to area. For instance, the rent on a 2 bedroom apartment in my area is about $600 a month but in N.Y. city the same size apartment would be around $2,000 per month.
