Some gase like carbon-dioxide,methane,ozone and water vapour absorb the infra-red radiation dirctly from the solar radiation and are called important "green house" gases.Among these gases, water vapour and carnon-dioxide are powerful absorber of terrestial radiation also emitted from the earth's surface(apart from absorbing the IR radiation directly from the solar radiation) and re-emit the obsorbed radiation,in part downwards.
It is because of this property of these gases that the atmosphere does not cool rapidly when there is a layer of low and medium cloud cover present in the atmosphere. The heat radiation from the Earth's surface is readily absorbed by the cloud layer(because of the presence water vapour in it) and re-radiated back back to the earth's surface with the result that there is less cooling of the surface and the atmosphere near the surface becomes warm and sultry. This effect is called "greenhouse effect".

The greenhouse effect is the process in which the emission of infrared radiation by the atmosphere warms a planet's surface. The name comes from an analogy with the warming of air inside a greenhouse compared to the air outside the greenhouse. The Earth's average surface temperature is about 33°C warmer than it would be without the greenhouse effect.[1] The greenhouse effect was discovered by Joseph Fourier in 1829 and first investigated quantitatively by Svante Arrhenius in 1896. In addition to the Earth, Mars and especially Venus have greenhouse effects.

Not in any respect. The greenhouse end result is a well factor. Without the greenhouse end result, the earth's temperature could be 60 levels chillier and we might all freeze to demise. It could be like dwelling again for the duration of the Ice Age. What motives worldwide warming is greenhouse gases like CFC's, CO2, and methane. Global warming is unhealthy for the reason that it intensifies the greenhouse end result.

Mainly CO2 emissions, and methane caused by waste and permafrost (gass that is being released from the polar ice caps) worse than CO2
