Overrated: Titanic Star Wars Episodes 1, 2, and 3 Citizen Kane - sad but true Scarface isn't this monster American classic - it's just violent. Good, bit overrated. Underrated: Contact is one hell of a movie Don't knock Lawrence of Arabia until you've seen it The film Montana was interesting

Overrated:
-Citizen Kane (not that I've seen it but from what I've read the only reason it's ranked #1 on AFI everytime is because of it's camera angles and not much on the quality of the film and story itself).
-Casablanca (again another movie from the 1940s that only gets so much credit since it's old, in Black and White and contains lots and lots of flowery dialogue)
-2001: A Space Odyssey (an ok movie but elevated to the status of greatest movie ever made simply because people 'make' some sort of grand meaning out of a bunch of wacky imagery with no meaning).
Underrated:
-Ben Hur (1959, 11 academy award winning epic with awesome spectacle but greatly underappreciated).
-LOTR: Return of the King (say whatever you want but unfortunately this wasn't on the AFI list and despite being so painstakingly well made is often bashed without any consideration to the work that went into it)
-Gandhi (1982, a great epic with magnificent performances but hardly recognised possibly since it focuses on Indian culture rather than American)

Now don't get me wrong, I like those 3 movies, but they are completely overrated
