Does this bother anyone else??? I understand people have homework and all, but these are questions that are easily answered once you put in the effort. I just think this should be a place for intelligent debate with thought provoking questions.

Do you know how many times I've been reported to YA for abuse because of taking kids to task for this?

Honest to god, some girl posted a question last week about the Bush/Gore debates, saying that she couldn't find any information about this on the web. I told her that a Google search on "Bush/Gore debates" yielded over 72,000 hits. I also committed the unpardonable offense of suggesting that she visit a library.

What did I get for my trouble? Several abusive emails.

I once posted a question VERY similar to yours, trying to get people to not answer what are obviously homework questions. You wouldn't believe the abusive answers I got - apparently there are people who are more than happy to provide in-depth answers to kids who can't be bothered to do their own work. I wasn't getting abused by kids, I was getting abused by the people responding to their questions!

UGH!

I couldn't agree with you more - this should be a place for intelligent debate with thought provoking questions. Although given the responses I've often received, I'm not even sure THAT's a reasonable expectation!

If you have the time, take a look at my questions and answers. I'm always happy to hear from people who are similarly curious, unindoctrinated and passionate about the search for answers.

Glad to know there are people like yourself on YA.

I think people are basically lazy and want to skate through school without having to put too much effort into it. Thinking requires effort.

I ask for clarification if I don't understand a question, or even help if I'm just not getting a concept after having wracked my brain on my own, but I enjoy the satisfaction of figuring things out on my own. Makes me feel like I've accomplished something.

Nice post :)

By the way, would you mind doing my homework for me?? LOL Just kidding.

When you answer a question for a student that in essence does his homework for him, he NEVER learns HOW to do his own research and will suffer later.
You will be doing him a disservice.
Helping someone is nice, but do it in a way that heads them in the right direction, but leaves them with the task of having to do the hard part themselves so they learn how.

Schools today do not teach students to think at all; they teach them to pass tests (TAKS in Texas; dunno about other states). Taht's what I'm seeing here in the Homework Help; the kids have been taught to just have the answer at hand in order to pass the test - you don't have to know what it means or how it was arrived at so when the answer isn't at hand they're at a loss on what to do.

But hand them an xbox controller and they can save the world.

I agree, I would like to see something more in the lines of:
What do you suppose it's like being a child in what seems like the Age of Global Terrorism?
