Battery is strong. Starter is no problem. I changed the distributor. It cranks but it just won't start. For about a week before it stopped starting, when I crank, I had to press the gas pedal slightly to fully start the car. What could be the problem?

It takes three things to have combustion--air fuel and spark. Obviously we have air. Did you check for spark? I know you said you changed the distributor, but does the distributor rotor turn when you crank the engine? If not, then you have a broken timing belt. If you get spark the timing belt is ok.

if you don't have spark and the rotor turns, then either the rotor, cap or ignition coil is bad. The ignition coil is a common failure on vehicles of that age.

If you have spark then its a lack of fuel. The fuel filter could be restricted or the fuel pump could not be working. I think you have a fuel filter on the engine wall of that car...its easy enough to check. The fuel pump works off of a main relay that controls the pump and the ignition; the main relay is usually not the problem on that year but they do fail.

my guess is you'll find you don't have spark and if I had to guess at what that cause would be the probability is high that it would be a coil.

hope that helps

It could be the fuel pump, maybe a electrical problem like there is no spark.

also check the spark plugs. I find it that, in lots of cases, the sparks are worn out.
