Avoid HP, Compaq, Gateway and Dell.
I'd say anything else is pretty good.

Why avoid HP, Compaq, Gateway, and Dell? For one, their computers BARELY run. This isn't to say they're slow, this is saying that the power supplies on their computers and laptops are BARELY enough to run the computer, so god forbid you ever wanna stick a PCMIA card in there (for, like, memory card reading, or even wireless access through cell phone)

And let's not even get into the "exploding battery" debacle from a few years back.

Dell is by far the worst, I only know one person (out of 8) that have SOME kind of Dell Product that didn't have a serious problem. My girlfriend's Dell has had to have its motherboard replaced on two occasions...... in the first year she owned it.

But then again, the horror stories go on and on. Let me get back to my point : you want a laptop that will run reliably, run the stuff you need it to run, and NOT die.

Anyways, this probably isn't the BEST... but I'm going to say look for "Acer" laptops. They also do the bulk, cheap goods, but they use better parts than most other bulk manufacturers.

In any case, when you buy a laptop..... buy a warranty. One where they'll be willing to replace the laptop if it just BUSTS on you.
