Go ahead and let him touch it but with your supervision. Be sure he doesn't press on it though as the baby could suffer brain damage or possibly die. The reason baby's have soft spots is because when they are born their skull isn't fully developed yet and the soft spot is where it's pretty much wide open.

If he were to touch it softly your baby wouldn't have any bad reaction but may infact like it.

My 4 week old daughter loves it when you rub her head.

It is fine to let him touch it, as long as he doesnt hit it really hard. Babies are tougher than you think, and it takes more than a little bump to hurt their soft spot.Nothing would happen if he pushed on it gently, but I wouldnt recommend letting him. Although it does seem kind of weird that your 13 year old wants to touch it so badly. Make sure you explain to him what it is and what can happen if he hits the baby on it.

Don't push it because you'd be pushing on baby's brain... the soft spot is where the skull has not fully hardened to protect the brain! It is protected, but like cartilage, not hard bone like your adult skull.

here's a little from one pediatrician website:
""The anterior fontanel, or soft spot on a baby's skull, is a cause of concern for many parents. Elsewhere, the baby's brain is protected by a wall of bone; here only soft, squishy tissue separates the brain from the traumas of the outside world.... "" http://www.drgreene.org/body.cfm?id=21&action=detail&ref=359
it also says that the soft spot is not as vulnerable as it seems, the soft tissue is quite resiliant...

so basically:
touching it is fine...
gentle pressure is fine...
poking -don't risk it!!

It is fine to touch it just don't let him push on it. By 13 years old he should know better than to push on it. Touching it though won't hurt the baby or anything.

Yeah! It's ok for him to touch it. He is curious and that's normal. Don't let him push on it or anything but just touching it is ok. At 13 he sould understand that he can't just go touching it all the time and just explain to him if he pushes on it too hard it could hurt the baby.

I am sure he could touch it, just don't push on it or anything like that. It doesn't hurt the baby...we're talking about the soft spot on the top of the head right?

Well, what do you think? Should you let him push on it? Come on...I would let him very gently touch it. Do you think he might be mean and push hard? If that's the case I wouldn't even want to leave him alone with the baby. My nephews are 12 and 14 ands they are so gentle with my son. They love him to death. I guess it depends on how your older son acts...

touching it is fine, but don't push hard on it. The baby's brain is well protected by a membrane and fluid, but its not something to play with. Your son is just fascinated, thats all. Let him see its nothing exciting and let it pass.
