I went to craigslist and searched for somebody who could help me with my taxes. I contacted this lady and she is willing to help me. So, I trusted her. I gave all my receipts, bank account statements, and other important bills. At first, our communications are ok. She even went to our place and introduces her kids and talked about her life. Then, I paid her $250. I made a mistake, I did not get any receipt from her. Well, at least she's still communicating through email telling me the book is ready and she will gave it to me in a few days. When I got back from vacation, I can't get hold of her already. I left a lot of messages, but no response. It is already 2 months and the tax filing extension will be on Oct 15. My plan is to go to her house and get all my documents. my concerns are: is it safe? what if she will say she lost everything because of this and that? what will I do? Can I bring her to court? How? Please help me!!!

The first thing I would do is red flag your accounts and asked to be notified if anything goes on other than the normal things you do with your account. This protects you from theft of anything out of your account. I would also contact the police and ask what can be done. You might be able to take her to small claims court. Ask for the money back that you paid for a service that was not performed and any additional costs it has cost you and make sure you have documentation on everything that you said and she said. You may also send her a note about all the things you gave her to prepare your taxes and that you like it all in a week and send it registered mail. Make a copy of the note and keep for yourself. That way if you have to take her to court you have all the documents showing you made every attempt to contact her and was not responding. Good luck.

if it gets too near the date when you have to file your taxes, ask for an extension. Then the two of you go out to her place and take a copy of the check that you wrote her for $250. Did she cash that check? have you checked with your bank? And when it was cashed? Ok, so go see if she's home, what her place looks like (if she's been there), and if it looks closed up then go ask her neighbors.

I always use H&R Block because they have many offices in the area.

After you asked for the extension, call your attorney and tell them the problem. Say you need that accountant to either produce ALL of your paperwork or produce the results (your taxes) ready to be sent in (with her signature and address on the taxes). Your attorney can write her a letter stating your concerns. He can also hire a PI for you to see what's up with that lady.

I enjoy hearing other peoples comments, and it always bothers me when I see people giving advice that jumps to conclusions. You must remember that you can't make this woman look bad or she will sue you. To prevent being sued, you need to talk with only an attorney and only about your immediate concern. The attorney will advise you what to do..

write a demand letter to her? then court? I would also report her to the IRS, let them see what they can do? she might be in a world of her.
