I have the feeling that the "providers" just sells you the ilusion of speed.

you can search for "bandwith test" in google or go to speedtest.net

go to www.dslreports.com to benchmark yer internet connection. You can also try downloading a big file form downloads.com or someplace else and check yer speed. Speed is relative. It depends on what applications u r running. 256 kbps (32 kilobytes/second) is good enough for general browsing but not sufficient for big downloads or streaming video.

Try this. Sign up for dial up from Netzero for the free month. Then switch to broadband. While you're on Netzero, download the adobe reader. When you switch to broadband, download the adobe reader, then you can see if it's an "illusion".
