A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with additional training. The schooling takes over 12 years including the undergraduate and medical degrees. Income potential is over $150,000 per year.

A psychologist is not a medical doctor but has earned a PsyD (Doctor of Psychology) or a PhD in Psychology. That schooling takes about 8 years including the undergraduate and master's degree. Income potential is between $75,000 and $100,000 per year.

To be a child psychiatrist you need to be a qualified psychiatrist, then you get specialized training to learn child psychiatry.
