Although I have no reference for this, my understanding is that notebooks and laptops are exactly the same. The reason the name changed is that when some people put the laptops on their laps, they could receive burns to their legs from the heat. To discourage this (or at least so they could shed accountability), more companies started referring to them as notebooks. Other than that, the only difference truly is size.

Difference Between a Laptop and a Notebook
Source: http://whitecapcomputer.com/newsletter/articles/notebook_vs_laptop.htm

Laptop computers are somewhat larger than notebooks and will accommodate a built-in disk drive unit and; optionally, a floppy drive unit. That is, a CD ROM drive is either built into the unit or the unit has a built-in bay that will accommodate a removable CD ROM drive.
Notebook computers will allow you to attach, via cable, a CD ROM drive. Since the drive is not built into the unit, notebooks are smaller and lighter than laptops. Hence, a notebook is an ultra small laptop. Another way to look at it is a notebook is about the size (or a little larger than) of a real [binder] notebook.

Laptop is any portable computer that can be put on your lap, whereas notebook is any portable computer that can be very portable having battery as the source of power.
Notebooks are lighter, better battery life, usually smaller screens and keyboard. But laptops have all the cool stuff like much better graphics card. Internal DVD+RW drive, where notebooks usually don't. Laptops have everything that a PC does, where a notebook could be missing some stuff, depends on the notebook

A laptop and a notebook are two words for the same thing.

Ok I will yield to the people below me and admit that there technically is a difference and once upon a time that difference was probably something official but these days the words are used interchangeably.

Historically, when the portable computer came out, a laptop was a mobile computer that had an internal cd rom disk drive and yes, was larger in size and weight, while notebooks such as the IMB thinpad t50 , for example, was a "notebook" that didn't have a built in cd rom drive but rather a port that you could plug in and out floppy drives and cd rom drives.

With todays technology the difference is basically none.

Of course if you are going to buy a computer i recommend a laptop because you could take it anywhere, and it could act as different gadgets for you. Like in a trip or vacation it could be your computer, dvd player, picture or video album, way of communicating, and stereo system(if you get good speakers for it you could go on vacation and take your own music and have a way better stereo than the usual hotel radio - alarm clock)
