1) The colonists were Puritans. They didn't like certain aspects of the Church of England and believed it could not be, changed or reformed. Puritans were also illegal in England, so they fled to modern day America to escape religious persecution, practice freedom of religion, and maintain a church as they pleased.

The question "Could less drastic measured have been taken?" is really an opinion.
You could argue no. The Puritans, who were unwilling and strong in their faith, could not have lived in peace in England.

OR

You could argue yes. Because the Puritans were so strong in their religious belief and unwilling to give up their beliefs, they could have held secret meetings and church services. Its really just what you think.

2) Sorry! I don't have an answer for the second!

I think the first answer was taxation without representation, I know we all hate taxes now, imagine getting taxed just because they said so, with no vote at all, it would make one feel so powerless. Also I think the colonists came here for religious freedom as the kings in Europe were forcing their entire kingdom to become Catholic or some one religion if the king said so, another non-free feeling.
