That's a different kind of "chemistry"! When you say "society," you have to be more specific. Do you mean conservative society? Liberated societies? Fundamentalist society? There is no one set of rules that will satisfy both the most open-minded and the most dictatorial in our "one" society, so the question can't be given a single "right" answer. As for the consequences, they too often depend on which kind of society has the greatest influence over the life of the person(s) concerned, determining whether they have access to the most current and responsible advice to protect themselves against disease and unwanted pregnancy, among other potential consequences.

I know I haven't answered the question, but unless the book that posed it is either ancient or written for an abstinence-only school district, it was probably designed more to make you think than to come up with a "right" (or ("left") answer.
