First, do you remember it being there prior to the fire?
Was it insured?
If it wasn't insured or you don't have proof of the items usually it's difficult to get them back or get back money on them.
Call the police, report the items stolen, inform them-but not in an accusing way who has had access to your home since the last time you saw the items, let it go from there.

No that hasn't happened to me. We live in Yokohama, Japan and a friend of mine had a kitchen fire, she was cooking Yorkshire dumplings in the oven on very high heat and the oil caught on fire. Anyway, the firemen turned up and all of them took their boots off and left them at the front door.
You know in Japan we don't wear shoes in the house, we change into slippers at the front door. Only in Japan!
Sorry about your experience.

I am sure you have insurance. I hope you had taken pictures of said jewelry, and the value of it. I would suppose from time to time this may happen, but do think it is the exception. Can you prove the jewelry was where you put it the day of the fire. Are you 100% sure they did it?

Firemen have come to my home three times in the past 15 years. Once to extract a child who was locked in a bathroom, once to extract my granddaughter's finger from a hole in a daybed, and once to extinguish a grease fire in my kitchen.
In an emergency, I I would contact the local fire department before I would contact the police department or any emergency ambulance. The fire department responds within minutes; and they are trained to administer any medical emergency.
To suggest that any fireman would "loot" someone's house is ludicrous.

Wow, you must live in Newark, New Jersey, the firemen there, well, lets just say, their axes have glue on them. There are so many reports filed after the fire as to missing belongings, it is inconceivable. God Bless.

Firemen came to my residence about ten years ago to put out an electrical fire in one of the air conditioning units on the roof of my house. They were absolute professionals. So much so that I volunteered to do some precinct walking and telephoning to get people out to vote on a bond issue to build more fire houses in our community. Your story just reinforces the wisdom of my decision to get the heck out of the Tri-State area in 1957 and never look back.

Twice ; and they were wonderful . Never in my entire life have I heard such a degrading story about firefighters and I have to tell you - I don't believe it for a minute . Heroes don't steal .
