How can I stop my keyboard from using strange characters?

My laptop wont let me use the characters above my numbers, such as percent and the and sign. What should I do.

I'm not sure exactly what's causing it, but try switching the keyboard and see if its the problem. If its not, then at least you know its the computer!

You are holding the Shift key down while typing the character, aren't you?

Also, did you check the font you are using?
