I have such bad writers block. Sometimes I won't get any ideas at all, and others I will get the stupidest ones in the world that I have to write or they won't leave me alone. This time is the worst though. I got writers block- in the middle of a sentence! I've tried thinking of different ways to write the sentence, I've taken a break, I gone through my notes and the rest of the story, but that sentence keeps getting stuck- right in the middle! Help!

Listen to some music, make an omelette, let it come to you. It's hard to get past writers block glaring at the screen.
Any simple, absent-minded task, like taking a walk or mowing the lawn, tends to get your brain drifting. You might find the sentence just pops into your head (or an unexpected idea).
Do you write on a laptop? If so, you might try moving to a different room of the house. Sounds silly, but sometimes even a change of scenery can help!

This is where you whip out your journal and start brainstorming. Just write anything that you have on your mind right now. Keep in the line of writing till you get the hint of an idea coming on and try to keep to your story subject.

Over-thinking? There is no such thing. Your brain is in need of rest. When you write in your journal, free write as much as you can even if it doesn't make any sense. Sooner or later an idea will brainstorm in your head and you will never stop.

Good luck!

There is no one surefire way - experiment and see what gets your mind going. Some ideas: Read - if you can't write just now, read! Try to read good books known for their quality and within the genre you prefer to write. This will help both by getting your mind off the problem and by inspiring ideas. Write - just get the pen moving. Start ranting or philosophizing, or just penning whatever is on your mind at that second. Don't even think about it, just write. There's no inspiration like self inspiration. Start something new - idea's are easy, making them happen is the hard part. If your idea is not working, put down the work and start something fresh. Let the ideas come to you instead of struggling to force them out.

My mother in law once told me, regarding getting pregnant, that if you just relax and stop worrying about it then it will happen. I've, ironically, found that to be true in other areas of my life as well. Take a break. Breathe. The more you try to solve this sentence the longer it will take you. Sometimes you just need to erase the sentence entirely and approach it from a fresh angle on another day.

Here's an idea: skip the sentence. Continue writing the story and come back to it...the rest of the story might fill in the sentence for you. You are probably blocked because you are trying too hard...let the story work it out for you.

To avoid writer's block I usually do plenty of research on the topics I want to write about: let's say I need to write about ghosts, you'll see reading books about paranormal phenomena, taking pictures of places that might be haunted, talking to people about their "ghostly" experiences, subscribing to ghost related forums, etc. You have to immerse yourself in the universe of what you are trying to do, find a passion and go after the final goal which is to have finished literary marketable products, movie/TV series scripts, etc. I always begin writing by developing character structure (their inner drives and psychology), the location and plot outline, a draft treatment, or a scriptment. If you keep on practicing you'll develop fluency and consistency. English is not my first language, but I certainly don't let that stop me from writing.

Good luck!

Karla is SO right. Ask your characters! It does work. You will find often you get the answer just before you close your eyes, so keep pen and paper close at hand. The more you know about your characters, the more likely you are to actually get an answer. I get answers all the time when I ask. Pax-C

I have had block before, you need to relax and stop dwelling on it and keep a pad and pen with you at all times, the thought may complete itself at the oddest times. When it does you need to be ready. Relax, walk away and entertain your mind with other things, it can not be forced.

Have you tried asking one of the characters?
