To make a controlled experiment (which, BTW, -all- experiments should be) you have to keep all of the conditions the same so that any difference in the outcome will be caused (you hope) by the one variable being examined.

If you're trying to determine which bicycle has the best bearings by crossing a line at some known speed and seeing how far it will 'coast', don't test one bike on a calm day and the other on a windy day ☺
