Over ten years ago I got a drug charge and did some probation for it. About 1 year later I got arrested for battery and got 2 more years probation. I never plead guilty to either charge. Then I got arrested 6 years ago for an assault charge but it got dismissed as it really did not happen and there was no proof. So with all of this I never plead guilty or was convicted and did time.
I was troubled in my early 20's but have completley turned my life around. I am now making the Presidents list in school and getting awards for scholastic excellence. Do I have any chance to get a government job?? I am thinking of expanding my business degree and getting into criminal justice. Please help me!!

Hell why not, 535 of the Governmental Employees have either been convected of a crime or is currently involved in a court case against them.

Being arrested is not the same as being convicted. Whether you plead guilty is only applicable if you were not convicted. The battery charge that was dismissed should not affect you. You will have to list every time you were convicted of a charge because there will definitely be a criminal background check done once you are considered for employment. If you do not tell about your criminal background (say the conviction was in another state) and they find out about at a later time, you will be fired without recourse as you must attest to the accuracy of your application hen you first applied.
Sorry about the length of my reply. You should be OK if your convictions were not felonies.
Good luck and keep up the good grades. It will pay off in the end. Take it form a person that went back to school in his late 20s. People appreciate a person that makes an effort to turn their life around.

For a more detailed answer then other people have given... after a certain amount of time you are legally able to get your record expunged. This is not just something minors do when they reach 18. We, as adults, have that right too. With misdemeanors it is 5 years after with good, clean record after and if you can prove how good you are doing it is easier, for felonies it is 10 years.... Getting it expunged is the best way to go. I also have an arrest record and will be doing this when the time is right for me. Good luck with your quest.... I will probably be right there with you because I also would like to work in government.

Something is wrong with your statement. You cannot be sentenced to probation unless you were first convicted. You cannot be convicted unless you plead guilty or had a trial.
Anyway, getting arrested (but not convicted) will not prevent you from getting most any government job.

It's going to depend on the requirements for the particular job. "A government job" is fairly vague. If your talking about the Secret Service or such, your past could come back to haunt you. Just surf around and check out what you are interested in and then e-mail a recruiter off the site and ask him/her the same question.Good luck !

Be honest and show you have years of no trouble. Also, how could you get probation yet not have a conviction?
Either way, keep up the solid work and btw...Private sector pays way better than the govt!

yes you can still get a goverment job but a arrest record might make it more diffcult,dont lie if asked be honest
