Being a true fan is all in the eye of the beholder.
Old school fans still listen to their team on the radio, or even just follow them day to day through the box scores in the newspaper.
all the good times... all the bad times, living and dying each day with the scores, reading every article about my team I could get my hands on and recruiting my friends to root for my team.
Once the team is mathmatically eliminated from making the playoffs - start looking forward to Spring Training and opening day - knowing for sure that next year is going to be "the year"
_____________________________________________
...you do not have to be born in the state the team plays for
...you stick with the team whether they suck or don't
...you do not have to be born in the US to like a US team
Am I not considered a "true" Twins fan since I was born in Japan?
THATS CRAZY - you love the Twins - you are a "true" fan no matter where you were born.

It doesn't matter where you are born or where you live, you can be a fan of whatever team you want.
I am a native Marylander born in Baltimore. I've been exposed to the Orioles all of my life. My interest in baseball was sparked because of them, and of course it helped that my parents would also take me to Camden Yards too.
I don't think there's any unwritten rule that states you must be from a certain state to root for a certain team. You can root for whoever you like. My only feeling is that to be a true fan, you have to suffer through the bad times as well as enjoying the good times.
The Orioles where a good team in the 90s, always competative (until the last couple of years), Cal Ripken had broken surpased the Iron Horse Lou Gehrig for the all-time consecutive games played record in 95. It was a good time to be a fan, once this season is over however, the Orioles will have had ten straight losing seasons. I'm still a fan, I watch the majority of the games.
I've been used to dissapointment, but I don't think I could ever put my heart into rooting for another team. I believe that I'll be remembering all of the down times the next time the Orioles win the world series.
So I say you can be a fan of whoever you want to, but a good fan stay true to their team I say.

You don't *have* to be a fan of the team where you were born.
You can be a fan of whatever team you want.
I believe you need to stick with the team through thick and thin. I don't like fair weather friends. It is acceptable to have a 2nd favorite but people need to stay loyal to their favorites.
You are a true Twins fan because you always back your team no matter what.
A person can be a fan of a team for many reasons. Some are because of location but that doesn't have to be the only reason. I like the Chiba Lotta Marines of the Japanese League and I wasn't born in Japan. I like Bobby Valentine and thats why I stated to like them. There are many reasons why someone can cheer for a team. Becoming a fan is a personal decision.

You just have to always pull for your team. Know the player names and watch the games or find some way of keeping up with the team and how they are doing. I am a cubs fan an i pull for them despite the fact that they have not won a world series since 1908 but hey the where the first team to win back to back world series. But being born in japan does not make you any less of a fan for the team you support, as long as you stick with your team you are a fan.

Can keep a box score
Enjoys a 1-0 game
Doesn't leave until after the last out, even if it's 40 degrees, or the score is 18-0
Doesn't get bent out of shape over a questionable umpire's call.
Doesn't like "seats right behind home plate."
=
Even if he never goes to a game, he still
Enjoys a 1-0 game
Watches or listens to ALL of a game on radio or TV
Can keep a box score
Doesn't get bent out of shape over a close call
And if the fan of a poor team, says "wait until NEXT year."
---
I live a mile from a minor league stadium.--go to about 50 games a year,
(Reading, AA Eastern league, phillies farm system)
I don't care where you were born. There is a Japanese league, isn't ther???
Go Ham Fighters!

For me, a "true" fan (and yes, there is such a thing) is someone who lives and dies by the team he roots for. No matter if your team losses 119 games in a season or not. It doesnt matter where you live, or where you were born.
A "true" fan knows the game of baseball, and loves it no matter what. I thnk another criteria is you appreciate good skills and talent. As much as i dislike the yankees, I can appreciate the skills and talent of derek jeter.
Also, in my most humble opinion, one of the most important things of being a "real" & "true" baseball fan is too know that pete rose SHOULD NEVER EVER BE ALLOWED IN THE HALLOF FAME, NOT EVEN AS A PAYING CUSTOMER!
What he did is just so blantly wrong, and if you dont understand that then how you understand the game of baseball?

I remember my brother played and I saw the Rangers play on tv.. around 97/98? I went to a game and fell in love with it! I used to just be a Rangers fan but after seeing Oakland & Boston a lot, I became fans of their teams too. I think anyone can be a fan of any team they want. If you support your team through the ups & downs, then your a great fan. Going to a game when you can isn't a requirement but it's always nice to spend a night out watching your favorite team. =)

You have to whine about Barry Bonds constantly... If you don't, you're not a true fan
There are no true or false fans... Just sit back and enjoy the game.
I, for one, have lived in New Orleans my whole life and have adopted the Giants as my team... I'm no less of a Giants fan than people who live in San Francisco
