What kind of cable do I need to plug an electric guitar into an amp? All I need to start playing electric guitar is the guitar, an amp, and the cable that connects them, correct?

It's a patch cord. It's a coax cable with 1/4" mono phono connectors on each end.

Don't forget to get a crazy color!

Your question reads as though you don't have a guitar, an amp, or a cable and you want to buy the cable. That doesn't make any sense.
I would assume that since the guitar makes sounds, that there would be a microphone type sound pickup in the guitar and a microphone type shielded cable that runs from the guitar to the amplifier. If that is the case, it would look like you would need to have the guitar first, so you could see what kind of connector the cable has to have on it. Electric guitars could come with a built in device that turns the sound into an electrical signal before it gets to the amp, or even the amp might come with that device to attach to the guitar. In any case, it seems to me that the guitar should come first.
And if you already have the guitar, you should know what kind of cable you need.

Ok, Eric solved the problem. Go down to Radio Shack and buy yourself a piece of coaxial cable and two 1/4 inch phone plugs and solder the coax to the plugs. The center conductor of the coax cable goes to the tip or inside connector on the plug.
