I can think of a lot of negatives.

Jewelry cleaning often requires jewelry polishing. Cleaning is merely getting the dirt off. Polishing is removing small--even microscopic scratches--to get that high shine the customer expects. Jewelry polishing is a skill that takes time to learn from a talented polisher. Because most of it is done on a bench motor, it is considered one of the most potentially dangerous things a jeweler can do. Not only can it cause physical harm to the jeweler if not done correctly, it can also cause damage to the jewelry.

You would need to carry insurance to cover the jewelry pieces in your posession. You would need to have tight security to insure that employees did not take items or swap out stones. You would need to make certain you had a fully-insured way of shipping the pieces back to your clients.

Also, understand that in most cases any harm that came to the jewelry while in your possesion would NOT be covered by insurance and replacement costs would be yours to shoulder.
For example, if I set a gemstone and harm the stone during the setting process, I have to pay for it. There is no way to cover my liability through insurance.

You will also need to acquire the knowledge to be able to tell what type of cleaning treatments any given piece of jewelry can withstand. For example, ultrasonic cleaners are great, buy you shouldn't put an emerald in one because the sound ways and the cleaning fluid can fracture the stone along already present fracture lines. Cleaning turquoise and stabilized turquoise are completely different processes--can you tell the difference between stabilized and non-stabilized turquoise? The list is endless.

"Can't be hard can it?" Yes, it can.
