You are right. Our self-interest used to be reason enough.

I'm not particularly sure what your question is but the American Psyche right now seems to be one of complacency. We are so distracted with American Idol, buying a new SUV, and going to the salon that we have blinded ourselves to the real issues. Many Americans are content with what the government tells them without reading between the lines, which is causing a cycle of corrupt powers stealing the freedom away from the American people. The majority of Americans need to start realizing what is really going on and band together to change the corruption and evil in our country that has siezed it by the throat. The American Psyche, overall, is one of complacency, apathy, and ignorance. If we are to survive as a nation this needs to change or we will find ourselves in the shoes of the roman empire during its end.

Using politics as an excuse for not wanting to make a decision is where most minds are today. Why? Some people are lazy and when they can't get into trouble by blaming someone else why should they really be involved?

Blue collar people swelled support to eliminate the estate tax.

It was called the estate tax because it taxed estates, not the money of blue collar dead people.

Suddenly millions of blue-collar folk were very easily encouraged to forget the tiny little factual detail -that they did not have estates.
We can begin by calling it basic gullibility, but somehow I suspect there must be something more than mere gullibility.
And it is indeed fairly unique to the American psyche.

What myths? What aren't we doing that we should to benefit ourselves? Your question is a little vague.
