A hypothesis is a proposition assumed as a premise in an argument. Hypothetical as an adjective describes events that don't actually exist but might be consequences of the assumption.

Example: Suppose, as a hypothetical situation, the price of gas was $10 a gallon. How might people change their transportation habits?
