I have found that sometimes certain people that I don't even know at theatre auditions ask which song I am going to sing. I think it is very nosy due to the fact that it is often out of "checking out the competition" and sometimes trying to find out what songs are being used incase they want to steal the idea. It stresses me out and and I don't know what to say because I don't want to be rude - also, even saying "I don't want to talk about it" seems rude and obvious. Is there a good way out of this without having to answer the question?

"Wait and see."
"It's a surprise."
"I'm still deciding."
"Can't talk. Feel like I might throw up."

What I do is say "I haven't decided yet, I've got it down to X-amount (then say songs that you probably would never sing for example me being a guy wouldn't sing 'I Enjoy Being A Girl' for an audition.)

And that seems to get people away from me, now if its someone I know and trust then I would tell them.

Get a set of headphones and pretend to be listening avidly while also reading a script.
Or just tell people that you never talk before your audition because you find that you need the time to focus. You could even print that on little cards to give to people instead of telling them that.

Say this very bright eyed, "I'm singing Tomorrow from Annie!" They'll think you're an amateur and write you off and hopefully won't bother you again!

Or, you could look very frightened and say, "We have to sing a song?"

LOL!

I would say, " Huh, I'm sorry, I don't know yet?

Or

" I'll tell you if you tell me."
More than likely if they are just being friendly they might answer, and if they are being rude, they will ignore you ..

When they talk to you just say "What? I'm sorry, I'm very busy getting focused" then turn away. They should get the hint.

Just Say: " Can I talk to you after my audtion, Im still warming up?" then you seem polite but people still know to get off your back

And

if they are really bothering you say "I'm sorry but my dumb agent told me not to talk to amatures."
That way they think its your agent fault not yours
