My two main characters, Ethan and Olivia, have a time machine. They need to go to either the future or the past to prove that the machine works. They also need to get in some sort of trouble, preferably the kind of trouble that strengthens their bond and even makes them have to get closer physically to add to the romantic tension.

Unfortunately I can't think of a thing. Help!

The time travel in my story follows the same rules as in Back to the Future. You can travel into the future or the past and you can set a very specific destination time. You can not travel through space, only time, so they couldn't end up in another country or anything.

I could give you a ton of ideas, but you'll have to choose whichever interests you more. Hmm... I'd personally love to read a novel about people who go back in time to the Egyptions. That's just me though. Maybe the late 1800's in an American city. I'm sure you could find romance there. The bloody conquests of Alexander the Great? The Trail of Tears would be very interesting. If you've never learned about it just google it. It was when the Indians were forced to travel across the land. There'd be plenty of sadness and tragedy to help your characters bond. The future would also be a good option for you. You could use your imagination and make it however you want it! Gooluck!!!!

someplace where you know about the social situations, politics, and if Olivia is a girl, you need her to be free to walk about with a boy which I assume that is Ethan's gender. So maybe pioneer days? early America when the telegraph and telephone wires were just starting to cross the country along with trains and people looking for a new life "out west". the past as exampled in Laura Ingals Wilder stories and Little house tv series, as well as many pioneer women and men's diraies of hardship can be found almost everywhere. You can make the hardship your characters face something easy to overcome...like missing the train, or the stage coach to um, Utah or Colorado perhaps??? and get your characters together in the end after they rough it on horses to catch the train/stagecoach at the next city. Maybe it could work for you. but whatever you pick, you need to know the background of the place first of course, like I said in the beginning. Good Luck.

First define the limits of your time machine. Can it move just through time or can it move through space as well?

The time machine H. G. Wells used delivered people to where the machine was in each era. He couldn't go back to a time before the machine was invented. He also couldn't switch continents, etc. They got around this in Time After Time by having the machine on display in San Francisco when H. G. used it to get to that time.

If your machine can go into the past, you'll have to have an idea on how it does it. You can get around that, though, if they FOUND the machine and it is preset. In that case, they could be wondering who the heck is the owner and how they are going to get back. And they could really freak when the machine disappears without them.

I wouldn't send them to the future, as H. G. Wells already did that. Why don't you send them to the past in the midst of a difficult time or conflict. For instance, send them to America during the Revolutionary War or the Civil War. Send them to France during the French Revolution or England during the Napoleonic wars. There would be plenty of trouble for them to get into during a war. You could send them to 1906 San Francisco during the earthquake or to Chicago during the great fire. You could even send them to Jerusalem during the Crusades or Spain during the Inquisition. You could even send them to London during Jack the Ripper's spree (this would really work if you can make it seem that Olivia has become one of Jack's intended victims...maybe due to her modern dress which Jack the Ripper would consider - to put it mildly - unladylike). You could send them to Germany during Hitler's reign or back to the time when the Catholic church was hunting for Martin Luther. Then again, you could send them to Italy where they meet Michelangelo. You could send them to England in 1066 during the Battle of Hastings. The list is actually endless. If they go through great strife/battles, their bond should be strengthened because they'll have to rely on each other for their very survival.

They could go to the past. Say, Jane Austen era?
Good luck! ^_*
