We feel we humans only have consciousness. but ...Consciousness is manifest not only in all living creature... but in Plants, trees, animals, birds Stones,
The Awareness of consciousness is varying from type of creation to creation. Stones have not awareness, Trees as tested in laboratory. that one tree was planted water with love .other was planted water with just as routine. the first bloomed with deep fragrance and more vitality. Trees have higher conscious ness than stones.
So goes the ladder up.. from Trees to animals to humans.
But humans have also demonstrated various levels of Consciousness. Some are just animal some are on the way to be called human . some are Evolved souls, some are Bloomed.
This birth is the chance to expand and experience out Potential consciousness.

By a general definition, yes. The energy contained is a consciousness. But, by human definition, we can only think of ourselves as more because we know we have a self-conscious awareness. Just because we do not live in that particular containment, does not mean that they are not self-aware. Pluck a leaf, and the plant reacts. The only difference between man and other animals, plants, etc...is that we have the concept of time and can 'dream' of future within that concept. Other creatures can remember and be trained or adapt and can anticipate. But, we can actually 'dream' formulating concepts not pre-conceived completely by past stimuli, although that plays a big part. Or maybe we are all the same and we just spend more time on it?

I'm assuming by living things you mean animals because plants definitely don't. In my opinion a brain is a prerequisite for consciousness. That's not to say that I think all animals with some variety of a brain or nerve cluster have consciousness.
In science they have tried to identify animals that can distinguish themselves from others of their kind in mirrors; in other words providing evidence that they understand they are seperate beings and therefore probably have some degree of consciousness. This has been shown mostly in higher order primates such as chimps and gorillas and in large marine mammals like dolphins.
Whether other animals have some variety of consciousness would be hard to guess. If I did have to take a stab at it I would divide the line at animals whose brain has at least some variety of cerebral cortex which is associated with thought among other things. This is as opposed to the cerebellum which is more associated with movement and various more basic brain functions.

Have you ever heard of humans?
Well, to be more serious , every living thing has a conscious, though it's not always available or "working"
To be literal, plants have awareness, animals have awareness and consciousness (mainly instinct), and humans...well humans have both but have a tedency to use less of what they shove out of their minds.
wow...i never realized i mistype so much at night....gotta change my habit. anyway, i fixed up some issues.

Likely, given that the amoeba subdivided to form two amoebas for apparently no reason whatsoever. That would suggest that on the cellular level all creatures have a recognition of self and self preservation.

I'm not sure because I am not all living things. A good way to test your answer out, might be to take a day to go outside and ask a tree, some flowers, a squirrel, a bee, a few birds, a few people walking by, a crossing guard, a grocery clerk, and, if you want to be chancy ask a police officer if he or she has a conscience.

Though they certainly have varying levels of intelligence, I believe humans are special in that regard. I also believe we are the only creatures able to contemplate our own death. That is my belief, but I wouldn't argue if solid evidence was presented otherwise. peace
