I'd buy a house in a hot market, like on the beach in South Carolina, hold on to it until it appreciates, then sell it and make $$$$.

There is NO single item worth $1,000,000 to me. At least none that can be purchased. Therefore I would buy something that could be easily sold for close to that amount.
