If their payroll is $200 mil whatever, that could pay the salaries of 800 doctors at $250,000 per year. How productive that much money could be to society if used properly, rather than feed somebodys greed to win a sport. Any team or sport really, just picking the high one. Thoughts?

Everyone, I'm not trying just to single out the Yankees, like I said above any team or sport. Just meant in general, has sport gotten to be too extreme with greed and people who waste money on such things, and the players that demand it. Has it lot its "game" value?

Yankee fans who think I single them out, read all the question please. "Just picking the high one" is what I initially said.

Agreed, sortof. But Sports are not the source of the problem, instead they are just one sign of many that exist in our culture. The Yankees are not the problem (heck, its not like they show results for their money), they just exhibit the money that doctors, lawyers, and everyone else is willing to spend with their discretionary income. Should they reinvest it in society? yeah. Should I be the one to force them to? no.

MLB teams pay their players a lot of money because it is big business. Movie stars can make $10 million per movie and a championship boxer can make millions per fight. Look at what the Yankees do for the city of New York. There are thousands of people that earn a living because of the Yankees and they generate millions of dollars in revenue and taxes for the city. You should really go a lot deeper into this subject and you will see the many benefits and the added value a MLB team brings to the area in which they play.

to BOBBOB...

are you kidding you know nothing about NY do you? You've probably never been to NY because if you have you'd have known that NY is one of the safest largest cities in the country and the world.

and to the original question i agree that pro Athletes are paid too much for playing a game but one thing i can't stand is when people criticize players for making all the money. if you were a ballplayer would you turn down the money. NO! If anyone is to blame its the owners who offer and pay the contract are. they're the ones who control how much an athlete makes not the athlete. Don't bash an athlete for making so much money when its not his fault people want to pay them so much. And i know your not bashing the athletes i just wanted to address this point.

If the man wants to spend $200M let him put it into educating medical professionals to help in the Bronx, and not into the crud that goes on the field in Yankeez stadium.

Six doctors could be educated for what Damon is being paid, and the results would be much better.

I'd rather the players be getting the money than the owners keeping it all in their pockets. True, the money that is spent on athletes is ridiculous, but if you think about it, the number of people good enough to play professional sports is ALOT less than the number of doctors, lawyers, etc. What infuriates ME is the money thrown away by the US government on the war in Iraq...BILLIONS AND BILLIONS of dollars that if they were invested back into the country would produce FAR more results than the salaries of some ballplayers.

It is the entire economy, not just the Yankees. If you were to make a better argument, then you should condemn Bill Gates, George Bush, Bin Laden, etc. They have more money than the Yankess, so LAY OFF THE YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Greed isn't just an issue in sports, it is an issue in this country as a whole. Think about it. Why do C.E.O.s of various businesses need billions of dollars a year? If you can take all of the money away from all of the people that make billions, you can help more people than if you only took money away from the Yankees. You can't deny that greed is an issue in this country., when C.E.O.s lay off thousands of workers just so that they could put more money in their pockets. Therefore, it is an issue not just in sports, but in this country.

Totally irrelevant how many doctors could be paid.
The free market system is best for all.
Its a supply demand system.
Baseball players are highly paid because the public demands it.
