The U.S. public was not interested in fighting the war until after the sinking of the Lusitania. Germany then toned it down a bit, but eventually returned to their policy of unrestricted submarine warfare and targeted U.S. ships of all types in an attempt to cut Britain off from U.S. supplies. When the Zimmerman Telegram was made public, that also enraged America.

Good results? League of Nations, but that failed. Temporary end of hostilities between the combatant nations.

Bad results? Abusive peace treaty that bankrupted Germany, and may have been a major factor in the rise of the Nazi party. Russia became the Soviet Union. These two facts alone helped lead to WW2.

1. The US was not late. The US joined when it had a reason to join, and not a moment sooner. When Germany continued to sink passenger ships carrying US citizens, the US declared war.

2. Tryanny was slowed. People died. Communism started. Tryanny took a new name.
