Does that mean Eddie Jones was better than him?

That only points out one thing. That one thing is that the NBA is loaded with a lot of talent in that position (the SF and SG positions). It doesn't conclude that Eddie Jones was better than Bryant but at that time being a veteran Jones was the actual choice of coach Del Harris, being the veteran he was.

Well Bryant (as most rookie do) went to an apprenticeship program which team normally undergo. Many players went through that (Nash - Kevin Johnson) and became so successful afterwards.

Hope this helps.

Funny, I had just asked this same question on another message board.

Eddie Jones himself had this to say "You ever hear people say a guy couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time? That was Kobe!". That quote came from "Kobe Bryant Beyond the Glory".

Jones did say however that "Kobe worked his butt off and became a great player". But Kobe as a rookie, was not good enough to start over a player like Eddie Jones.

Yes thats what it meant. Eddie was better than him. But that should even tell you more about Kobe. The fact that he broke Jordans scoring records while sitting the bench for the first few yrs. And playing alongside Shaq most of his career. When Kobe first came in the L, he was maybe the fourth option on that team, with Shaq, Eddie and Nick all ahead of him. Yet you saw his mentality, as a rookie, taking and missing that last second shot. Cause, you have to miss a few, before you can make them. And he definitely made his share of last second shots. Ask SA and Sac town.

He was 18! He was starting by 20 on a great team! There are not to many 18 year olds that would start over a young Eddie Jones

Tony Parker was a 19 year old rookie and rode the bench for only five games. After five games he became a starter. At 19!
No college experience. With one of the toughest and most demanding of coaches-Popovich. If Parker was good enough to work his way into the starting lineup as a rookie on a great team-why not Bryant?

yeah eddie jones was an all star then as was nick van exel. those two guys shot the hell out of the ball.kobe did get his chance to shine in the playoffs in his rookie year and threw up two airballs that would have either won the game or tied.i remember watching lakers games on my 19 inch tv and it was hard to tell kobe and eddie apart. they had the same kind of build and their numbers looked the same(8 and 6)

Because Kobe was 18 and the 2nd to come out of HS to the NBA and Del Harris beleived he wasn't ready to start yet because he was still a kid. But Kobe was probably better then Jones talentwise.

Are you asking this question in that past tense? cuz when Kobe was 18 he wasn't as good as Eddie Jones....now he's way better.

No, you have to remember Kobe started in the Pre-Jordan era which means basketball was a lot harder. And Kobe Bryant came straight out of high school, he started that. So do i think Eddie Jones was better in his first year, nope.

Because Bryant was just as much of a poor shooting ballhog then as he is now. He wasn't even on the All-Rookie FIRST TEAM! How embarassing. Yet he somehow made it to that year's All-Star game... hmmm, stupid Lakers homers, Kobe fanboys.
