In the "Behind the Laughter" episode, the narrator said that the Simpsons are from Northern Kentucky. This has caused confusion cuz they were referring to the "actors" that play the Simpsons family in the show, not necessarily giving up the state that Springfield is actually located in.

There have been several other hints in other episodes that suggest Springfield is actually in Kentucky though. The only one that I can remember off the top of my head is the episode where Marge got sugar banned from Springfield. Homer is enlisted by a group of men that want to smuggle sugar into Springfield. When they are telling him their plan, they say that they plan on getting the sugar from "south of the border" which Homer replies by asking if they mean Tennessee. Tennessee just happens to be the only state that borders Kentucky to the south excluding the southeastern border of Virginia.

In reality, it is just a television show and the physical geography surrounding Springfield and what not suggests that the city is a fictional Springfield that is based off of the fact that more than half the states have a Springfield in them. I saw one website that listed all the states that contain a Springfield and I think there were 30 or 32 of them. It is basically just a joke that people have spent way too much time trying to dissect.
