String and Ring Test: (not scientific)
This "test" can predict whether you will have a boy or a girl. Tie your wedding band or other ring on to a piece of string. Hold this string so that the ring hangs down in front of your belly. The string should start moving on its own. If the ring moves in a circular pattern, you are having a boy; if it moves in a straight line, you are having a girl.

Ring On A String Game

The way I understand it (From a MAGIC point of view) This works as a gender detector (not just for babies) for Male and Female..
You can hold it over the up-turned hand of either a Female or Male and get the same effect.

I would say that after hearing the RULES - "what movement is what gender" needs to be clear to everyone.
Who ever is holding the string will not be predicting, so much as, conveying their Thoughts/Wishes onto the movement of the string.(creating a side to side swing or a circular swing). The idea is to have string holder ( Usually you!)hold their hand as still as possible, yet concentrate on the swinging.

Gender on a String
The pencil-, wedding band- or needle-on-a-string test is among the most popular methods, says Ann Douglas, mother of four and author of The Mother of All Pregnancy Books (Wiley, 2002).

"This one is Hungarian in nature," says Douglas, who has researched the folklore behind the methods. "You put the wedding band on a string and hold it still over the belly. If it moves in a strong, circular motion it's a girl. If it swings in a pendulum motion it's a boy. It's psychological – kind of like the Ouija board. You think you're keeping it still, but there are very slight tremors in your hands that make it move. Still, it's a fun shower game."

The way my family does it can predict how many kids you will have and what they will be.

You thread a needle. Then stick the needle into the eraser of a sharpened pencil. Have someone hold the pencil (by the thread) about an inch or 2 over your wrist. You both have to be VERY still for it to work.

If you are preggo it should go either back and forth or side to side. You dont have to be preggo so if you arent it will start off going in circles to indicate time.

If the pencil moves side to side, you will be having a boy. If it goes back and forth, you will be having a girl. Do not move until the pencil comes to rest. It will give you the number, order, and gender of children you will have.

I swear it works!

I use a ring on a string - if it goes back and forth it is a girl - around in circles it is a boy...You can hold it over the palm of your hand - it will tell you how many, and what sex you will have... Mine would go around for a boy - stop - start going back and forth for a girl - stop - then start going around again....my first and second are 12 years apart - I said I would never have more and laughed at this parlor trick.... Does it always work??? Who knows but it is fun - but becareful - I have a friend that really wants kids but hers always just hangs there and she winds up in tears every time someone wants to give it a try. Correction - it is back and forth for a boy and circles for a girl....Sorry.

its an old wives tale . you are supposed to take a safety pin , tie it on a string hold it still in front of you belly then it will go in a circle for a few then it will either go side to side or front to back . side to side is supposed to be a boy. i don't hold much stock in it. i was told about the baby's heart rate. if it was below i think 140 it was a boy above a girl. all 3 of mine were below and i have 3 boys.

You put a needle on the end of a string and hold it above the stomach of a pregnant woman. If the needle moves crosswise, it is a boy, if it moves from top to bottom, it is a girl. however, this is just a myth.

It's a rediculous urban legend, that if you hold a string with a ring or your wedding ring in front of your belly and it swings forwards and backwards versus side to side you can determine the gender.

I don't know which is which; but it's just a legend.
