I think your friend might be pulling your leg. I've never seen a discus that looked like that, but it does resemble (at least in its coloration) a flowerhorn cichlid: http://aquarticles.com/images/Flowerhorn/Flowerhorn_2.jpg

I imagine that if you took a digital photo of a flowerhorn and compressed the image side-to-side, you could make it appear to have an almost round body like a discus. What gives it away, is that real discus have much thinner pelvic fins (the paired fins at the bottom), a longer, rounded anal fin (single fin on the bottom), and the tips of the dorsal (top) and anal fin aren't nearly as pointed at the rear: http://www.gcca.net/fom/fom_pix/discus.jpg

It actually appears to be a young, mutated, flower horn with a shortening of the body similar to the fat bodied goldfish.

Notice the way the scales on the peduncle (section of body right before the tail) seem to go backwards into the fish rather than laying smooth.

That would be my best guess.

I agree with what copperhead said. HOWEVER, IF you decide that you like this fish and you would like to try to keep a tank of discus, you REALLY need to do your research online, NOT just ask questions in this forum. They require a BUNCH of specific water parameters/food/temp./water changes, etc. in order to thrive..and even just to stay alive. They are not easy to care for (i.e. put them in a tank like a goldfish), and they are most definately NOT for beginners. They also are quite expensive, and not something that you want to take a chance at losing because you didn't care for the fish or the tank correctly. I just wanted to make sure you knew this.
Good luck. ;o)

Your friend is mistaken, what he has there is not a discus but a flowerhorn.
