with a 5 string you can play in lower ranges than a standard 4 string. 4 strings are easier to learn on, as the strings are a little farther apart, and thery are easier to slap and pop on (for me). the strings are closer together on a 5 string (which allows for easier chord-playing) and the neck is wider to accomodate the low B string.
right now i prefer my 5 string, since i use a lot of chords to help my band's music sound a little fuller (3 piece band: drums, bass, guitar).
then there are the brands to consider for quality......too many to compare......that decision is yours.
but the quality of "better" is up to you. if you feel more comfortable on a 4 string, so be it. don't feel pressured to play a 5 string just because everyone else says they're better. decide for yourself.

Get a 5! With a 5-string bass you get each and every thing you will on a 4-string, with some extra suitable notes-- as properly to extra positions for a similar notes. Six-strings are actually not frequently-- anymore-- purely a guitar an octave decrease. they're like a 4-string with the two one extra-low (B, like maximum 5-strings) and one extra-extreme string (C).

5 gives you much more versatility. My idiot ex is a bass player and has (at least when I was around) a 4 string, 5 AND 6 string. And enough power to play a friggin stadium....even though he is an incredible musician, he was insecure and made up for it with STUFF!
