For a log or scrap wood fire pit all you need do is grade out an area. I did a 4 ft diameter; 1 ft. deep, sloped around like a bowl. I added Lime rock to rim the pit and have had fires in it with no adverse effects. You certainly can also BANK the rim with soil above the ground level.
Obviously if PRIMITIVE isn't a notion for you; then the task will be more complicated, unless you purchase on of Hundreds of designs marketed in sooooooooooooo many retail outlets.

You need to find out if it's permitted in your area first.
You dig with a shovel for 21/2' foot, 3'in diameter. Use stone or block around the top of your hole, secure. Use a large wire grill, from hardware store or even garage sale, that you clean first and burn. For a hole you cannot use gas, will be wood. Good luck!

i built one out of cinder block but it is breaking up from the heat...my next project will be mortar and stone around a hole in the ground...that probably won't breakup so bad so fast.
and if that doesn't work i'll build one out of re-bar and steel plates or old metal barrels...
