I'm thinking about transferring to the Art Institute of Las Vegas in the next year or so. I won't even be 21 by then. Any opinions, comments from people who've lived there or do live there would be highly appreciated.

As all places, there are good and bad things. If you like sunshine then this is the place to be. The sun shines 365 days a year. Even on cloudy days the sun shines somewhere in the valley and will eventually shine on your area. People that live here are not social creatures like in other cities. They come home and immediately stay in their home. You will not know your neighbors. Too hot in the summer to be outside. Back yards are small and not used very much. Brick walls surround every yard for privacy. This was the hardest thing to get use to when I moved here. I was use to knowing all my neighbors and being outside to visit with them.

I visited here for 15 years before moving here. There is an excitement when you are a tourist. That excitement wains quickly once you move here. There are so many things to do here that a tourists do not have time to experience. That is a big plus. It is so nice having something to do when you find you can not sleep and would like to do something in the middle of the night. This city does not roll up the carpet at night like other cities.

Now the problem comes. Where do I go for vacation to match the excitement I use to get when I vacationed every year in Vegas. No matter where I go it will be a slow paced one.

Up to you to take the plunge. You can do nothing and wonder what would have happened or do it. Just remember that the strip is for tourists and if you move here it will be one of the last places you will want to go. You become part of behind the scene people who give the tourists what they want and need. No matter what job you have here. The tourists provide so much for your life here. You do not have to pay the state and local income taxes that every other person in the US has to pay.

The cost of living is a bit higher because of the housing market. Food is actually pretty cheap here in any form. Whether it is in a restaurant or at a grocery store.

Think it over before the move. The move will be pretty expensive but students are use to that. Now would be a good time before you decide to settle down. Good luck.

My wife was born here and I have been here most of my life. We have raised six kids and they all live here also. Once you get away from the strip Vegas is pretty much like any other town.

You live in a house and go to work each day just like anywhere else. You can do anything here you can do other places.

Vegas is the entertainment capital now so there is more to do if you are into all the shows. You have to be careful if you like to gamble. Remember, they don't spend a Billion Dollars on a hotel/casino so that they can give you money every day. Many people make the mistake of thinking they can gamble for a living and end up in the poor house fast.

Vegas is what you make of it. It is great for some people and the worst enemy for others. It is all about the person.

If you are looking for a big city fast paced life then Vegas is the place for you if you have the control to live with it. Vegas is no longer a small town.

If you won't be 21, that would be a mark against LV because you'd want to be able to visit the strip. It also depends where you are moving FROM....I moved from Oregon to Nevada and it took me awhile to get used to the heat and the scenery (brown). I missed the green/coolness of Oregon too much so it was hard for me.
If you feel like the heat/desert would be fine with you then yes go for it.
TRaffic can be in a pain (but what city doesn't have traffic problems)
Water sources might be iffy in another 10 years or so (Lake Mead is depleting at a rapid rate)
Sports: they have hockey (wranglers) and baseball (Las Vegas 51's) and you have UNLV as well
You have red rock canyon (places to hike)
you are 6 hours from the beach (cali)
you're close to the grand canyon

Also, you'll find that people that live in Las Vegas usually tend to stay away from the strip after they've been there a few months (I guess because of dealing with the traffic- I-15/95 were nasty- but I still thought the strip was fun even after I lived there for awhile), but you may think differently after you move there

If you can, try to visit (if you haven't already) and see what Vegas (besides the strip) is like

I have several friends who are out there (I don't live there). I have been told that it is a great city if you like to party. It is a great place to be if you want to make connections in the business world. If you want to go there to live a quiet life with a simple job, you may not like it. Just make sure you have enough money to live in a decent neighborhood.

If you are planning to go into advertising or design, then Vegas may be a good place for you to locate to.

I would say to visit first to get a taste of it....
Personally, I think vegas is better to visit. I've been 3 times & absolutley loved it...but for a place to live it just doesnt have the "home" feeling cause all the glitz & glam & lights and tourists.
It's like the city isnt real, ya know???
