If I remember my halloween folklore correctly I do believe the lit jack-o-lanterns were supposed to light the way for the spirits of the dead to find their way back to our realm on halloween night.

There was an old Irish legend that said: a man named jack was the village prankster, and one day he decided to try and trick the devil. So he did and the devil got stuck in a tree, and he cursed jack to be lost forever with only a turnip light to guide him through the darkness.
