By late September they are getting pretty cool, usually in the low to upper 60's. Usually once it dips to below 66/67 I will not go swimming anymore, but other people's tolerance are different. San Diego has the warmest water and the west coast and the beaches can vary too. It can be 70 degrees in the water in La JOlla but 65 6 miles south in Mission Beach, it's weird how the water temps can vary between beaches.

So you still might be able to get in by that time but it all depends on the currents, water temps can drop 5 degrees in a day or even a few hours if winds and currents shift. Here are some good website to check water temperatures in SoCal:

Water temperatures range from the mid 70's to the low 60's with High 70's and low eighties sometimes in the height of the summer months. Good swiming conditions usually but brisk. Lots of great beaches. I like Laguna and Newport but La Jolla is nice and Ocean beach and Pacific beach in San Diego are Ok. North county San Diego has great beaches as well.

Yes you can definitely swim. It's beautiful and not hot, but very, very, comfortable. Solano Beach, Newport Beach, La Jolla area and Balboa area. ;) Have a great time. You might want to cross over to Mexico (Rosarito Beach {Puerto Nuevo} ) for some tasty and inexpensive lobster.

Definitely warm enough to swim in. That's the thing I miss most about SoCal (after moving to the North).
