TEXAS CITY, Texas - Two sergeants who helped write a New York Times op-ed article sharply critical of the Pentagon's assessment of the Iraq war were killed in a Baghdad crash this week, and one grieving mother wants the Army to explain their deaths.
Another co-author, Staff Sgt. Jeremy Murphy, was shot in the head Aug. 12 while the op-ed was being written.

The Times piece, called "The War As We Saw It," expressed doubts about American gains in Iraq. "To believe that Americans, with an occupying force that long ago outlived its reluctant welcome, can win over a recalcitrant local population and win this counterinsurgency is far-fetched," the group wrote.

I think it is very sad that these deaths occurred. I also think it is sad that people are assuming there was a connection before finding out more facts.

I can see a grieving mother asking for answers, but I cannot condone citizens rushing to judgment on no evidence.

You talk to any grunt who served in any war...and they will tell you in many cases from THEIR view point things aren't working. Keep in mind, they don't see or have access to top level information. When the commanders in the field say it is not working...then believe it. Definitely NOT a New York times article...wonder how long it took them to dig up a few grumpies to get a story. I bet you a Million dollars that I could get a 1000 times that many who would tell you different..

Just more left wing propaganda!!!

Could it be possible that being soldiers they got killed in combat??? Judging from their article it seems they had a poor understanding of the situation so it isnt hard to believe that they could have gotten killed. We had people like them in every unit I was in and they whined all the time and were the worst soldiers in terms of training and completing missions. Not saying this is the case with them but rather it is my experience.

I do not think anyone forced them to join the military. Anyone VOLUNTEERING for military service knows that defending this country is the reason for the military.

Sh*t Happens. Are you trying to say the government tried to silence them forever?

Besides, so 7 soldiers said they disagree with Petraeus, while the other thousands of soldiers say it IS working. Wow, I guess those 7 really have the majority on this one and they must be right because that article is opinion based and not factually based like the Petraeus report!

So you're saying President Bush and General Petraeus planned and carried out the murder of those two soldiers? Or are you just insinuating it because you lack the courage to come and make the baseless accusation?

It's a sad state of affairs when the soldiers of this war start questioning the motives of our own military heads and the government that sent them in ill-equipped, ill-prepared, and ill-trained.

But I applaud their efforts nonetheless.

Kinda reminds me of what happened to Frank Serpico when he tried to clean up the N.Y. police force.

This could be coincidence, but the odds are very against that.
