I believe at least once, President Bush said something to the effect of "I don't do much reading" or "I don't read much" and also "I don't read newspapers" etc. I'm NOT trying to bash Bush in this post. Instead, what I DO want is a link to a reliable online news source or blog or transcript or anything that has this statement documented so I can reference it. Could anyone PLEASE help?

A typo, sorry, smart-***. I'm not even really going out of my way to insult the President, I'm just trying to find out if this something he's actually said or if it's a quote falsely attributed to him. Shoot me.

My question must be worded in a way that it's being misunderstood. Can anyone provide me with a source that shows where this quote or false quote came from? I've heard it attributed to him before on several occasions, but for non-partisan reasons I want to know if it's true or not. If it's true, good, if it's not, I'll make certain I don't perpetuate it.

If you can find a transcript of the Dec. 2, 1999 primary debate in New Hampshire, you may be able to get solid proof. I researched this question for about 30 minutes, thinking that it would be easy to find the exact quote. The closest I came was a Bushism that read,'I don't read newspapers..'. It was date stamped on Dec. 2. I'm guessing Bush said this during a debate. He is also said to have commented several times that he relies of people to keep him updated, and doesn't put much stock in reading intelligence briefs, but this is just his style. I would much rather hear it 'from the horse's mouth' when I'm running a project, too.

He was quiping about the worthlessness of the media really. It has been said that he reads books like they are going out of style. Just because he has a speech issue doesnt mean he is dumb. He did have a higher GPA than Kerry and actually graduated from a school that Gore failed out of. And no I dont agree with him on many many things but am not some far left ideologue or a member of the ignorant masses who rely on soundbytes as their major source of info

"I glance at the headlines just to kind of get a flavor for what's moving. I rarely read the stories, and get briefed by people who are probably read the news themselves." — George W. Bush — Washington, D.C., Sept. 21, 2003

Correct and incorrect, the statement was that he doesn't read newspapers much. He does read briefing papers and information that comes to him.

Our president at least has an understanding of the context for using the words "affect" and "effect", unlike the asker.
