The British (bless them) have this generous spirit of goodwill, and will not easily believe that one of theirs could ever do such a thing, especially if they are middle class and above. In other (good) words, they are very willing to give each other the benefit of doubt. Once that tide of support is also picked up by the very powerful media, it becomes very difficult to go against it. Notice before the Portu Policia turned the heat on the McConns, not even a single paper in GB ever thought, suspected or doubted them.
But like I said, once the tide is going one way, it hard to oppose it. Now the story is on a balance, and we are beginning to see both the GB public and media having second thoughts, which a lot of us had in the very beginning. A good proportion are also sitting on the fence now, waiting to see exactly which way it will go.
For me, the very key question the McConns had to answer is why leave your toddlers:
- alone,
- at night,
- door unlocked,
- abroad
while you go AWAY to drink/eat?
If the McConns did it, the GB public will be disappointed but other stories will come along to grab the media limelight and they, like others before them, will be a forgotten history lesson.
In the meantime, the media would like this case to keep going, as it obviously keeps them in a job.

Personally, I dread to think what would happen.
There is no place on this world that they would be able to hide although if only one was convicted, I'm certain that the other one would want to distance themselves as far as possible from the first.
Although, as I have said in Y|A before, the guilty parent would be released and relocated somewhere else, Canada or Australia, with a new identity to protect them. They wouldn't be safe in a UK prison.
The guilty person will be deemed unfit to stand trial or to complete a sentence as the trauma of losing a daughter would be considered sentence enough.

Personally I think it best not to speculate on this issue. There is enough nonsense published, conjected and spouted on this subject, especially by some lynch mob mentality people on this site who are convinced they have the case all sewn up.
Remember the basic, just and fair premises of our laws of the land require firm, real evidence to solve or judge any case or investigation and that a person under suspiscion of a crime is innocent until proven guilty. A lot speculating prattlers on this site would do well to think long and hard about what this really means!

I am convinced that Kate McCann and Gerry are innocent
However, if what you have asked was the case I personally would feel horrified and betrayed but mainly devastated for little Madeleine.
I think the press would turn on them badly, tear them to shreds and expose everything about them. It would be vile.

Outraged. sad. angry, foolish, frustrated, helpless, betrayed whatever but there is not a thing any of us would be able to do about it and if (I hope not) this comes to pass that justice would prevail. However, lets not speculate it is not helping to find little Madelene.
