It would be nice to say that your chances of being a successful race car driver are based on talent. Sadly, that is not the case anymore. To be successful as a racer-if you are a female-you need extreme talent, dedication, look like a Playboy Playmate, and most importantly, a lot of money and/or someone to bankroll you up the ladder to where you want to go. In particular if you are going into open-wheel racing, money IS the deciding factor in getting a race seat. I wish you all the best and as a MAJOR racing fan myself, I hope to see you in a major series around the world in the coming years.

Here's the deal you can be the best driver in the world but if you don't get to the right races or the right class's for people to see you that have loads of $$$$$$$$$ then just set your goals as a armature.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being an armature driver either. I would say you asked this in the IRL section and you mention Karting, so road course action is not out of the question so I would aim my goals to the SCCA group it is a club that is very well known as a pro / armature car club. Just about every area in the states has a club near by. Very many pro drivers come from this group.
There is a NASA group too. They have been around since 91 and I am not that familiar with them but Marco Andriette came threw there on his way up to the pro series. I am spending the weekend at there National Championships this weekend at Mid Ohio and after watching the group in a whole they are a bunch of pretty talented drivers and they seem to match there cars very good. Friday we never seen any one car really run away with any group it was in racing.
So I guess if you have the backing to get started then go for it but the all mighty $$$$$$$$$ is the bottom line whether you are going to get there or not and where you decide to race.
good luck

that depends on what level your talking about, there are well over 2 billion people in the world, probably closer to 4 billion,
out of those 4 billion, 17 people race champ car, 17 race irl
22 race formula 1 and 43 race nascar, butt as far as local dirt tracks and home town go karts there are hundreds of people racing so have at it just cause you probably wont race at indy doesn't mean you can have a real good time

Lots of great race drivers never get to the big time. Forget about fame and just win races. Learn all you can and never back down or settle for second best. The point is to have fun and enjoy racing.

Work hard at it and you never know. There is a foundation, The Lyn St. James Founcation, specifically geared toward getting women into the traditionally male-dominated forms of racing.

If you would like information on that, look here: http://lynstjames.com/

Lyn St. James, former Indianapolis 500 competitor, founded this to get other women into the various forms of racing.

When you get to race at Watkins Glen, I'll probably be there!

Today's racers need to fit the corporate image. They need to be young, clean cut and articulate as well as talented. Some of racing's legends , a short, stubby bulldog like Cale Yarbrough or a partying boozer like Paul Goldsmith or an ex-convict like Junior Johnson would probably never make it in NASCAR today.
