Besides Harry Potter, I like to reread Nancy Drew, the Henry Reed series, Dr. Doolittle, you're right...there are a lot of fine children's literature that is still fun to read as an adult.

I guess because I still have one "learning to read" at home, my idea of a book for children can be very broad. I love Bark, George and the Black Lagoon series (principal from the black lagoon, teacher from the black lagoon, school nurse from the black lagoon, etc) because they make me laugh--even when I know what will happen in the end. Hop on Pop is another because from my stepdaughter on it is the book our children learned to read first, just a fun family legacy. And then there's one my son wrote when he was six called Little Sam and the Big, Mean Fish that I really enjoy, though that is mostly because of the creative illustrations he added. You've just got to love a child's creativity. :)

Oh wow. In addition to HP, I still love Treasure Island, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes (which was not originally a children's series, but has been relegated to that status), Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass, The Mad Scientists' Club, and the list goes on!

The Phantom Tollbooth.
I know it's an old one, but as a kid, all the hilarious symbolism and punniness went over my head. I knew at that age that I had read something very special and important, but I just didn't get it. And now, being older, I've found all the plights and lessons in it to be incredibly valuable.
