It's all about the money. The best ones though, say something a bit dirrerent... Something like: The entire time I worked here, they only had 1 or 2 dishes that I didn't like...they are no longer on the menu...but may I recommend (expensive entree here) and then try to upsell you on wines...an additional appetizer for the table to share... Those are the best ones able to get away with the BS and make big $$ because they actually act like they care. Plus enthusiasm about the food always works to "help the customer convince themselves" about what to order...suggestive selling.

Nope. I am a witress and I tell the truth. Don't get the tortellini. Don't get the Broccoli cheese soup. Yes, that keg was tapped yesterday. No, I do not like the meterbraten. Then I suggest things that I know to be higher quality and more enjoyable. I want them to be happy. It's my job.

lol. good point. If I can't decide I sometimes ask if they have a favorite dish or two they could recommend. This is especially true if I'm in a "Mom and Pop" restaurant and don't know the specialty. =-)

Actually one waiter at a Outback Steak House told me NOT to order the prime rib because the cook always over cooks it!
So I got pasta instead. :)

I never ask that. I know what I am getting if I am there, and besides, I dont depend on anyone elses opinions to help shape my own.
