The thing about being an author is that you come up with your own ideas to write. Otherwise you aren't really an author, you are just someone using someone else's intellectual property. The best advice is write about what you know. If you cannot come up with an idea, you aren't ready to write a novel yet. When the idea comes, then you will know it. Pax-C

I usually come up with ideas for novels in my dreams. Last night would surely make a winner. I dreamed that I had found the lair of modern day vampires or demons or something. Wierd thing was, it was in the guise of a fancy downtown building, and you supposedly took a tour or something, like a fun camp. However, as you got inside, you found yourself in a wilderness, and it wasn't easy to get back to the entrance.
It was also odd that I seemed to belong to some sort of hunters group or something. I had a set of long barelled revolvers, the shells were big, like it was a large caliber.
As the dream went on, it got more involved and spooky. I wasn't sure who to trust, and once I thought I was caught, but was handed some spying hardware by someone on the inside. I had to make an escape, and I made a terrific leap from the steps around the building onto an edge above a highway, like I had great leaping muscles or something. It was so amazing I thought about it all day.

What i would suggest (if your novel has twists and turns) your female character should go into a coma for 2-3days she wakes up and her boyfriend is overjoyed. She gets to go home a few days later but then she dies and come to find out later (maybe as a dark secret from a doctor) that she had bruising in her brain that was slowly swelling which hermoraged and killed her while sleeping or just watching tv ( you can get creative with that part of it). Hope this helped! :)

That's a rather broad question.
Here are some sugguestions.
What happened in your last dream? Build a story off of it.
Google random images. If a picture is worth a thousand words, than google could give you a novel.
And NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is coming up soon. You could always get involved with that.

being an author takes a lot of work and you must have some really great ideas for a novel. Like mystery, funny, non-fiction, fiction, and fanasty.

Something provocative and original. You have to come up the idea yourself, or you should'nt be a writer.
