Mercury thermometers are still actually quite common for scientific applications, especially for use in measuring high temperatures.

In organic chemistry lab, we were each assigned a mercury thermometer which went up to around 300 degrees celcius, and then had to calibrate it by taking melting points of known pure compounds.

Most non-mercury thermometers are some sort of alcohol, typically ethanol.

The ones that look like they have metal in them are still mercury.

the ones we have in the biology lab at school still use mercury.
