Well a couple weeks ago i was at my local saltwater fish store about to buy a pair of true perculas but i could of sworn they were false percs by looking at coloring and at that point i was 100% positive they were false percs. The false percs they were selling wer priced at 20$ but the true percs at 35$. Do pet stores try and pass off false percs as true percs to make money?

Yes,they do. It's also possible that they didn't know the difference. They also make up exotic sounding names for fish they can't identify.(Even some that they can.) There are unscrupulous people in every trade. The best way to avoid being taken in is to get the Latin name of the species they are selling and look it up on the web or in a good book. If the pet store people can't give you the Latin name, maybe you should look for a store that can. Do your homework, know what you are purchasing and what the water, temperature, food and other requirements are for each specie before you buy. If the store just got a shipment of fish give them some time to adapt to the new surroundings, and for any disease symptoms to show up. If you are concerned about the animals health ask the pet store to hold the fish for a week or two. They might require payment, but if the fish are sick you should be able to get your money refunded.
Knowledge is power.

I don't think you really need to ask whether some people do things like that, and even more dishonest than that. In any industry there will be dishonest people, especially when making money is concerned. Being well-educated is the only real defense against being cheated anyone has when buying anything, and it looks like it paid off in your case.

Some may try, but most just don't know. Sometimes, they order one fish and they get another advertised as what they wanted. At work, we ordered a neon dottyback. After about a month a customer told us it was a bi color blenny and he was right. None of us had a clue.
