Because that is what they are taught in school. You see the North would not look so righteous if they taught that the south seceded because they were having there states rights trampled and that the north only counted Blacks as 2/5 of a person.

The south seceded because of a tyrannical government. Freeing the slave was a ploy to try and get the southern slaves to fight on the side of the north.Meanwhile the North was conscripting the Irish as they came off of the boat from a starving Ireland to fight their war for them.
It was a most heinous time in our history.

The Civil War was mostly about economics but slavery was a tool used to gain support for the war in the north. Elementary school history is very basic. It cant really go into details that would take a level of comprehension kids general cant grasp. In high school and college I was taught the different reasons for the civil war. I think a lot of students dont really pay attention to what the teachers are teaching, esp in high school, so they might have been taught but in their elementary school minds they still associate civil war and only slavery.

Slavery was a pretty big issue, though, because as more and more nonslave nations entered the union the south felt as though it would lose all its political power too. So slavery actually played a pretty big role in the Civil War. It just wasnt really about freeing the slaves though.

Slavery was the major and the immediate cause of the Civil War. The southern states started seceding after Lincoln was elected and before he was even inaugurated.

The Declarations of Causes of Secession issued by several southern states stated that they were seceding because the northern states had elected a president “whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery” (South Carolina Declaration).

For over a decade, the major arguments in Congress had been about slavery. Conflict over the issue, however, dated back to the founding of the country when, among other things, the founding fathers prohibited slavery in the Northwest Territories in the Northwest Ordinance. The South seceded because of slavery and the North fought to preserve the union.

The general ignorance of the American people on the history of their own country. Slavery was an issue but there were many more issues that lead to the Civil War.

I think it has to do with the laziness of American education, and a lot of perpetual myths we associate with Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation. "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James W. Loewen is a good book that explores this and other prejudices and misunderstandings we have about American history.

The Civil War was NOT about freeing slaves. It was about preserving the Union. Thanks to the worste president in American history (James Buchanan) the South's economy took a dump because of his policies. Freeing the slaves was an added bonus of keeping the Union intact.

They are ignorant of American History. To be fair the deplorable institution of slavery played a large part in the war, and the victory of the Union.

well... to me personally...

it seemed to be the "spin" that the North was putting on the war... I mean the Emancipation Proclamation...

and the victors often write history...

plus the issue of "states rights" is not really that "sexy" as issues go... people's eyes glaze over when you talk about it... but slavery... that's a "just cause"...

and also the fact that it was an issue...

That IS what was taught at my school and were my children went to school.

Micheal Moore I was taught by conservatives, trust me on that
My children were educated in a very very conservative state,
It has noting to do with libs. I guess you could blame it on the conservatives only teaching what they want ua to know,

Because slavery was the most publicized issue that triggered that war, and the one that was most polarizing this nation at the time.
