most definitely. but it`s people who go over the speed limit and can`t control their cars who are as bad.in the village I live in there has been quite a number of deaths through speeding and perhaps two drunk drivers.so which is worse??

I think that there should be a zero-tolerance regarding alcohol + driving. I was a driver for 15 years and the only time I ever caused an accident was when I reversed into a lamp post with no other car in a 5 metre radius! I surrendered my licence 8 years ago when I developed epilepsy (strangely, in the UK, no one compels you to do so!). Although the seizures are now controlled, I would never drive again - no matter how much I miss being able to do so. For anyone to drink and drive should mean immediate loss of their licence whether they cause an accident or not.

Drunk driving is dangerous, but I'm concerned that putting such emphasis on it detracts from other dangers. Anything that impairs your awareness of the road is just as deadly- this includes talking on the cellphone, driving without sleep, or driving an improperly maintained vehicle.
Yes, drunk driving is and should be illegal, but we shouldn't forget to be responsible with everything else too. A car is a two-ton piece of steel that we steer around at the speed of a professional baseball pitch, and drivers need to be constantly aware.

true that alot of people do not obey the laws and drive with a suspended license. (which they obviously did something stupid to get it taken away in the first place) and it is becoming more of a trend that people who are sober are distracted by their cell phones, or doing other things while driving that would be better left off of the road.
However, intentionally inhibiting your reaction time, and driving skills by intoxicating yourself, then intentionally getting behind the wheel of a vehicle is reckless, and should be punished. I have almost gotten run over by people who were either falling asleep at the wheel, or were intoxicated, and it is not a fun situation to be in.
I think that the punishment for DUI DWI's should be more extreme. On the first offense, the license should be taken away. BECAUSE you knew what you were doing when you got into the vehicle. If you planned on drinking, you could have planned on getting a DD. I have been the DD for many people as I never drink, and in order to keep them off of the road, i do not mind doing it.
those are my thoughts.

that's because drunk driving laws have deterred drunk drivers from driving. THerefore there's not as many drunk drivers on the road and they kill less people because there's just fewer of them. Of course there are more accidents by sober people... they're out there driving all the time... tons of them. ever watch a highway near a city on a weekday morning? Drunk driving laws are not meant solely to punish people for drunk driving, but to ensure the safety of everyone by deterring those people from driving and by getting their friends to stop them from driving. We make examples of drunk drivers by punishing them severely to deter them and others from drunk driving in the future. Causing an accident is also illegal and that's to deter sober people from driving recklessly.

I cant see why drunk driving should NOT be illegal, it's BLATANT disregard for safety of others as well as the driver and his/her passengers. People under the influence of alcohol are impaired and should not be operating anything that can kill someone. If a sober driver has an accident it wont be because he is impaired.

Many people get in to car accidents do to many circumstances ( speeding, on the phone etc.) yes stuff happens , that is why it is a accident . Drinking and driving is not a accident its a choice we make to get in a car with our minds altered on purpose. I feel if you drink you have the responsibility to not drink and drive. Its the law and the responsible choice.

I don't get it - only ban drinking and driving if all deaths are caused by it. Of course srink driving should be illegal.
Even if you are right and other things cause deaths it just means we should be looking at what the other things are and what to do about them.

What is your point?
More deaths are caused by sober drivers than drunk drivers...so we should loosen up the laws.??
It doesn`t follow.
Anyone who drinks and drives should be sentenced and jailed.
Drink drivers are SCUM!!

More people are killed by sober drivers simply because of the number of sober drivers compared to drunk drivers.
More people are killed by sober drivers than are killed by being shot in the head.....it doesn't mean driving is more dangerous than being shot!
